What Are Nightly Notes?

  • They're the opposite of Morning Pages.
  • So they're written at night instead of first thing in the morning.
  • They are typed instead of handwritten,
  • They're public instead of private,
  • They're guided by questions instead of flowing freely
  • A completed entry consists of six questions and six answers instead of three pages
  • Since they are public others are allowed to comment on them
For an interesting variation on daily writing see 100 words.

"To be really great in little things, to be truly noble and heroic in the insipid details of everyday life, is a virtue so rare as to be worthy of canonization."
Harriet Beecher Stowe as quoted by Angeles Arrien in Signs of Life page 63

Tonight's Questions and Answers

Saturday, August 31, 2002
It is midnight!

  • who impressed me the most today? A woman I saw at the corner of Broadway and Barrett (or Baxter - I can't keep them straight). She was holding her drunk friend up and trying to get the woman safely across the street. Th drunk friend wasn't helping. She didn't want to be held up and she wasn't walking very steadily but her friend stayed with her, got a firm grip and I hope they made it safely to where they were going.
  • what did I do all day? did some planning for the site. Finally figured out a content plan that I'm going to official stick with. I came up with it a while ago then decided it was too much. And it is ambitious but it can work and it'll give me a foundation from which to start. Also, I stitched (actually I used my new toy, the buttoneer) nine buttons to the bottom edge of each of the twelve memoir books. I'm focusing on "Connection" first so I gathered some things, reread that week from The Artist's Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity and otherwise decided what to do with the thirteen pages of the book.
  • when did I leave th house? 5 pm
  • where did I go today? meeting at buckhead's & "party" at Have A Nice Day Cafe (interesting place but not my crowd - Ms. T won a party - they tell people that to get them to bring more people :-)
  • why didn't I get more done today?
I'm going to have to change these last two questions. I've been doing fairly well with actually doing an adequate day's work. I must have thought that this would be a problem since my time is so unstructured but I've obviously grown!
  • how could I have been more productive? I could have not gone to the party. But Ms. T always hangs out with me if I'm doing something and I'd never been in Have A Nice Day Cafe. The 70's and 80's music was fun.
